‘Dare to Lead’ by Brené Brown

This is an empowering book about having the courage to handle difficult conversations with honesty and compassion. It offers insights and techniques to help you develop qualities of leadership with sincerity and communicate truthfully with others. It describes the fears and foibles we possess as vulnerable people, how to acknowledge them and how to use them to help us interact more effectively as leaders and with one another.

This book explores our central fears of shame and humiliation, and how these fears inhibit what we say and what we do in our leadership styles. It goes on to describe our protection routines that are almost automatic and how we can stop them from keeping us from the truth of what is happening. It also describes how we can catch ourselves in a self-protection routine so that we can stop it and begin to deal with the reality, rather than being defensive.

How do you nurture stronger and braver leaders? What qualities of leadership skills do you want to develop? How do you embed the value of courage in your culture?

Brené Brown says, ‘One of the most important findings of my career is that courage can be taught, developed and measured. Courage is a collection of four skill sets supported by twenty-eight behaviours. All it requires is a commitment to doing bold work, having tough conversations and showing up with our whole hearts. Easy? No. Choosing courage over comfort is not easy. Worth it? Always. We want to be brave with our lives and work. It’s why we’re here.’

This book is primarily written as a business tool kit, applying many business and personal stories however, the core skills are for everyone. It is excellent at describing the tools that are necessary to live more authentically. The main focus is on self-compassion, empathy, resilience, grounded confidence, and acting and speaking with integrity. This is the latest of six books written by Brené Brown.

Brené Brown gave a famous 20 minute lecture at the TED institute – The Power of Vulnerability https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_on_vulnerability?language=en
